SCRUTINY

Fostering mutual understanding on scrutiny

As the MHCLG releases statutory guidance on scrutiny, Camilla de Bernhardt Lane explains how Devon CC's decision makers welcome the challenge and contribution to policy made by scrutiny.

We are proud of our approach and outcomes in scrutiny in Devon. We apply reflective practice to support members to improve impact. Last year we transformed our annual report to ask the question ‘what difference have we made?' This went beyond merely writing a report and was a step in looking at the value of scrutiny to the organisation, as well as challenging members to make the best use of resources.

We also have the express support of the decision makers in the council, who value and welcome the critical friend challenge and contribution to policy that scrutiny makes.
