Local authorities detected and prevented 75,000 fraud cases, saving the public purse £336m in 2016/17, according to figures released by the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA) today.

Overall, the number of fraud cases dropped from 77,000 cases in 2015/16 though the average value of each fraud increased from £3,400 to £4,500.
