Free lunches improve school performance, trials suggest.

Research suggests higher educational attainment when free school meals are provided to primary school pupils from deprived areas.

A pilot scheme in which free school meals were given to all primary school pupils living in deprived areas resulted in higher educational attainment, research published today suggests.

According to the results of the trials undertaken over a two-year period in Newham and Durham, children in these areas achieved between 4 to 8 weeks more progress compared with similar pupils in other areas.
