The coalition's drive to boost the number of free schools established before 2015 could send capital expenditure costs spiralling out of control, spending watchdogs have warned.

A report issued by the influential Public Accounts Committee (PAC) last week into the Department for Education (DfE) and the Education Funding Agency's arrangements for overseeing the free school programme stated there as a risk of costs outstripping available Whitehall funding.
