Backers of fiscal devolution have urged the government elected today to reconsider the policy despite their lobbying failing to get it mentioned in the manifestos.

Outgoing communities secretary Michael Gove had suggested last year that every party would ‘probably want to put forward manifesto proposals for improving local government taxation' after local government organisations including the County Councils' Network and London Councils had lobbied for fiscal autonomy.
