Councils must intensify their efforts to tackle child sexual exploitation, senior police sources have urged, amid fresh evidence that many youngsters vulnerable to abuse are in local authority care.

Updated figures on the extent of child sexual exploitation were released by the Child Enforcement and Online Protection (CEOP) Centre on 2 July. It follows high-profile cases of child sexual exploitation such as the Rochdale and Oxford grooming rings prosecuted over the past 12 months.
