A fresh vision for care leavers

Katharine Sacks-Jones gives her view of the Government’s Children’s Wellbeing and Schools Bill and where it needs to go further to deliver real change for care-experienced children and young people

As corporate parents of care-experienced young people, you know more than anyone the immense pressure the children's social care system is under. Measures set out in the Children's Wellbeing and Schools Bill clearly intend to improve children's social care, including better financial oversight and regulation about where children live and increased support for care leavers. But, further scrutiny shows where it could be strengthened.

Last month I gave evidence to the Parliamentary Committee reviewing the Bill, setting out what we welcome and where it needs to go further if we are to address the significant disadvantages children in care face. These are the key concerns I highlighted:
