Suggestions that town hall pension pots face a massive £85bn deficit have sparked a fierce war of words involving trade unions chiefs, actuaries and accountancy giant, KPMG.

Research by KPMG, extrapolated from data collected by the GMB union, suggests the aggregate deficit in the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) has increased from £38bn in 2010 to £85bn in the three year period to 31 March 2013.
