Funding affordable housing in future

Steve Quartermain argues that Section 106 has been quite successful at securing concessions and contributions from developers, and he also considers if a new approach that sees affordable housing delivered through a revised levy would be good news.

News that the Government has signalled an intention to review the way affordable housing (AH) is delivered, through a revision to the Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) and S106 contributions, has sparked a bit of a debate in recent weeks, probably spurred on by the fact we have been waiting for ‘something to happen'.

In practice we really do have to wait and see, but while the real CIL and Section 106 experts get down to business we can ponder on what the goal is here; what is the Government trying to achieve?
