Funding communities at the coal face

Areas like Bassetlaw need a change of approach by Government that delivers investment in hard-to-measure community assets, argues David Armiger.

The recent report by the Coalfield Regeneration Trust on the State of Coalfields cast a much-needed spotlight on the ongoing problems facing former coalfield communities.

Leaving aside the concerns that most communities faced with colliery closures in the 1990s are only now beginning to see regeneration initiatives coming to fruition, there is a stark reality facing these areas – that of how to return them to cohesive communities.
