In recent years, the public leisure sector has faced a challenging environment, with factors such as Brexit, the pandemic, and the energy crisis leading to the closure of some leisure facilities, and significant revenue loss in the case of many others.
One of the most concerning consequences is the potential loss of essential community leisure facilities such as swimming pools, sports halls, gyms and pitches. These facilities play a pivotal role in promoting physical activity and social interaction, supporting the health and wellbeing of individuals and communities, and providing opportunities for children and young people to develop new skills and interests. However, with 74% of council areas categorised as 'unsecure,' the sector is at continual risk of losing these critical services and facilities and will be for some time.
