An influential MP has called for the establishment of the first independent all-party parliamentary committee in nearly half a century to direct the future of the civil service.

Bernard Jenkin, chair of the Public Administration Select Committee (PASC) last week informed Cabinet Office minister, Francis Maude, who is responsible for overseeing the Whitehall reform programme, that a reappraisal of the civil service's very purpose is required.
