The Future of town centres

Councils, ‘as the ultimate reserve buyer with wider civic responsibilities’ are likely to end up owning shopping centres, says Richard White. He offers some advice on how to make high streets work.

By some estimates the pandemic has fast forwarded the move to online by three years, catapulting landlords into a position they didn't want to be in and thought they still had time to avoid.

From this destruction comes an opportunity to take our High Streets and remake them into a destination for the communities they serve, but leaves retail centres with bland, generic environments and offers at risk.
