We are £1 better off compared to 2008

After more than a decade, average pay has risen above its pre-election levels. Michael Burton asks what the future may hold for pay and productivity

It has been a long-time coming but latest figures show that for the first time since just before the recession almost 12 years ago, real pay less bonuses was more than the pre-downturn peak.

Furthermore the private to public sector ratio of total pay was 0.99 in December 2019, indicating near-equalisation between the sectors' total pay levels, according to the Office for National Statistics this week.
