£5.4bn surplus recorded for public finances

The public finances showed a welcome £5.4bn surplus last month as record self-assessment tax revenues boosted the Treasury's coffers.

In good news for chancellor Jeremy Hunt as he prepares for next month's Budget, income tax receipts were £21.9bn in January - the highest January figure since monthly records began in April 1999 and £5.5bn or one-third higher than in January 2022.
