Winter service teams across the country have been praised for keeping local road networks running this week, as freezing weather tested resilience plans put in place by councils.

The cold snap saw thousands of residents take advantage of new salt bins placed in residential areas, while farmers, community groups and parish councils helped grit hard-to-reach areas and side streets.
