A global problem tackled locally

Global events can end up as local problems, as the rural district of Fenland discovered when it encountered human trafficking on its doorstep. How the council and its partners tackled this complex issue and stopped the criminals earned it not just one, but two winners’ awards in this year’s MJ Awards.

Human trafficking and gangmaster exploitation sound like subjects for a crime movie. In fact they turned up in a quiet rural part of the Fens in Cambridgeshire where the district council, Fenland, found a problem on its hands.

Its response, Operation Pheasant, has been nationally recognised as one of the biggest and best partnership projects that has successfully tackled these issues, which has improved the lives of many and brought criminals to justice.
