A golden age for local government could lie ahead

Far from being dealt a poor hand, local government looks to be a winner from the reshuffle, says Claire Kober.

What's in a name? Despite what Shakespeare said, if the last few days are anything to go by, it seems quite a lot, actually. The decision to rename the Ministry of Housing Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities (DLUHC) has sparked a crisis of confidence among some in the sector.

In many respects it's little wonder. Names contribute to our sense of identity, we grow attached to them and they can tell us about the esteem in which a person, thing or institution is held.
