Housing is rising rapidly up the agenda. Communities secretary Sajid Javid last month launched a review of both the quality and quantity of housing. In the aftermath of the horrific Grenfell Tower fire, social housing is a key issue, and with rising housing costs creating disaffected young voters, supply has a political premium.
The Conservative Party conference saw Theresa May take on housing – no doubt encouraged by her chief of staff, former housing minister Gavin Barwell. Tackling the issue ticks all the boxes when it comes to her post-election commitment to help JAMs – those just about managing – and it gives her a legacy outside the confines of Brexit.
