A good gig?

Helen Snow looks at the implications of the gig economy for local authorities

The term ‘gig economy' has become common parlance over the past couple of years. It denotes a labour market that is characterised by the prevalence of short-term contracts or freelance work as opposed to permanent jobs.

This is not necessarily a description associated with a local authority workforce – which has traditionally been unionised and where jobs have been considered more permanent and long-term. But things may be changing.
