Council chiefs have reacted with anger to the decision by education ministers to wholly axe funding for the Children's Improvement Board – with immediate effect and barely one week into the start of the new financial year.

The funding blow calls into question the future of sector-led improvement and improved performance on adoption, tackling child sexual exploitation and learning from serious case reviews.
