Third sector groups have disputed government statistics, which claim local authority funding for charities has increased by £1bn over the last four years.

In an answer to a written parliamentary question, local government minister Brandon Lewis said the total amount given out by local authorities in England to voluntary bodies has increased by £1bn since 2008.
