Government must now connect with the 'just about managing'

This government has made many commitments, especially to the new Tory heartlands of the Midlands and the North, says Paul Wheeler. These will need a determination and sense of purpose that has been lacking in previous administrations, he adds.

Now that the dust has settled on the General Election it's increasingly clear what will be the greatest challenge facing our Prime Minister. It's not having to deal with a revitalised opposition (he's safe there for a few years). Nor is it dealing with a dysfunctional US President (although that will present its own challenges in their own US election year).

No, the biggest challenge is the same one that has faced every PM (and local council leader) – how do you build a constituency for change? As a nation, and especially the part of the electorate that actually votes, we are increasingly resistant to change of any kind.
