Government defeat on elected mayors

Labour Lords have won an amendment to legislation which would stop the government forcing councils to have a directly elected mayor as part of the conditions for devolution.

Labour Lords have won an amendment to legislation which would stop the government forcing councils to have a directly elected mayor as part of the conditions for devolution. 

The lords teamed up with their Lib Dem counterparts to defeat the government on three amendments to the Cities and Devolution Bill which will require ministers to report annually on devolution, introduce a suitability test and allow cities to have devolved powers without the need for a mayor.
