Government 'must deliver on Brexit promise'

The leaders of the UK’s less developed regions are seeking a guarantee from the Government that they will not lose out on vital economic development funding due to leaving the EU, says leader of Cornwall Council Adam Poynter

Regional inequality is increasing in the UK and the Government urgently needs to deliver on its promise to rebalance the economy. Cornwall Council has taken the initiative to bring together leaders from across the less developed regions in the UK to jointly express our ambitions for a future UK Shared Prosperity Fund.

As leaders we are looking for a guarantee from the UK Government that we will not lose out on much needed economic development funding because of leaving the EU. Our joint letter to James Brokenshire, secretary of state for housing, communities and local government, expresses our concern that the promised consultation has not yet been published and calls on the Government to deliver a fair UK Shared Prosperity Fund as an absolute priority.
