The Government should provide certainty and clarity over financial reforms

Looking ahead to next spring’s Spending Review, it is critical the Government provides a significant and sustained increase in overall funding for local government, says Cllr Louise Gittins.

An additional £1.3bn in grant funding for councils in England will be in the provisional local government finance settlement for 2025-26 when it is published next month.

This extra funding, announced in the recent Budget, includes at least £600m for social care and together with council tax flexibilities and locally retained business rates, will provide a real-terms increase in total core spending power of about 3.2%.
