Senior local government figures have urged ministers to rethink proposed legislation announced in the Queen's Speech last week and consider a national procurement body for council audit.

The long-awaited Local Audit and Accountability Bill outlines plans to scrap the Audit commission and formalise arrangements for independent local audit of authorities.
