A graph of hope for the embattled Treasury

The only way we can develop graphs of hope is if the Government abandons its silo approach to protecting its departments, says Michael Burton.

Council chief executives are generally a positive bunch. I watched them last week at The MJ Future Forum.

They laughed, albeit nervously, as Sir Bob Kerslake said it was cold outside and his presentation was unlikely to make them any warmer. Presented with figures from the Institute of Fiscal Studies they scarcely blanched at the graphs showing stumbling GDP growth and spending forecasts heading downwards someway off the page towards the door.
