Hain takes the axe to town halls

Secretary of state for Northern Ireland Peter Hain tells Paul Marinko about his plans to reduce the number of local authorities from 26 to seven – and his views about structure in Wales.

Last week's decision to cull the number of quangos and public bodies in Northern Ireland did little to calm the anger of the province's councils towards secretary of state Peter Hain. But the Cabinet minister remains convinced the reforms are in Ulster's best interest.
