Chancellor Philip Hammond has a tougher job than his predecessor in managing the public finances and will need to prioritise spending plans, according to a report from the respected Institute for Government (IfG).

Chancellor Philip Hammond has a tougher job than his predecessor in managing the public finances and will need to prioritise spending plans, according to a report from the respected Institute for Government (IfG).

A combination of rising demand, unrealistic efficiency targets and a pledge to stick to Budget 2016 spending targets means the Government's spending challenge will be ‘more severe in the remainder of this parliament than it has been to date'.
