Chancellor Philip Hammond faces an uphill struggle to control public spending in the Autumn Statement judging by latest figures from the Office for National Statistics.

The good news is that borrowing was down by £900m in August compared to August 2015 and £4.9bn in the financial year to date compared to the same period last year.
