What happened under the last minority government?

Michael Burton looks back to the last time the UK had a minority government to see what history can teach us about our current political climate.

As we seem to be heading back to 1974 politically, since that was when we last had a minority government; economically, if Brexit takes its toll; and fiscally, with austerity now on the back burner and debt rising, it might be worth just taking a look again at that momentous decade.

Like Theresa May, Conservative Prime Minister Edward Heath called an election in February1974 to gain voters' support for a battle he was about to wage; in her case, it was negotiating Brexit, in his, taking on striking miners on the slogan ‘who runs Britain?'
