LOCAL DEMOCRACY

The hard work of electoral registration can never stand still

Peter Wardle sets out the Electoral Commission's preparations to support Electoral Registration Officers to deliver the biggest change to electoral registration in nearly a century.

Last year, I wrote in The MJ about the preparations that Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) in England and Wales would need to put in place in order to deliver the biggest change to the electoral registration system in almost 100 years.

Individual Electoral Registration (IER) came into effect on 10 June and has replaced the household registration system with a requirement to register individually. The transition to IER in Scotland then followed on 19 September. The change to the registration system also means that for the first time people can register online and there have already been 1.8 million online applications to register since 10 June.
