Hartlepool BC is poised to hold a referendum on the future of its directly-elected mayoral system.

Hartlepool BC is poised to hold a referendum on the future of its directly-elected mayoral system, which could see the authority revert to a cabinet model of governance.

The council was one of the first in the country to opt for a directly-elected mayor in 2002. Independent candidate Stuart Drummond – who initially campaigned as football mascot H'Angus the Monkey – has held the post since its inception.
