HB reforms threaten affordable homes crisis, watchdogs warn

Spending watchdogs have reported just under half of local authority areas could soon face shortfalls of affordable local properties.

Just under half of local authority areas could face shortfalls of affordable local properties in five years time because of housing benefit (HB) reforms, spending watchdogs have reported.

A National Audit Office study issued today reveals on current trends 48% of authorities will lack sufficient affordable local housing by 2017 – a result of pressure caused by the decision to uprate housing allowances by the consumer price index, rather than local rent inflation.
