Private care sector experts say that half of the country's care homes could be at risk of closure in the next few years because of spending cuts and that this represents a bigger crisis than that in the beleagured steel industry.

A credit ratings agency has already warned that the UK's biggest care home operator will be at risk without a financial restructuring.
