Help to Buy and the future of demand

John Keyes says the housing industry has a collective responsibility to prepare for Help to Buy’s discontinuation and councils are a key part of this as policy makers and increasingly as a direct provider of homes.

Throughout its lifetime the Help to Buy Scheme has received a mixed bag of praise and criticism.  

Despite attracting some controversy, there is no doubt Help to Buy has been a success both in terms of helping people get on the housing ladder and boosting new home construction rates. For instance, in the final quarter of 2018, 63% of all new home buyers in England used the Help to Buy equity loan scheme.
