The hidden dangers of business rates

With business rates devolution looming large, do councils need greater powers to combat local ‘phoenix’ companies? Haydn Rogan examines the case

In the current economic climate where councils are required to make more cuts and find further efficiency savings, the proposals to devolve powers to set business rates and keep the revenues to local councils by 2020 will provide an important source of revenue to councils going forward.

Against this backdrop it is no surprise the Local Government Association is calling for new powers to allow councils to suspend the licences of businesses which persistently or wilfully fail to pay their rates.
