Homelessness: bold new AI-powered thinking is needed

AI could be Starmer's secret weapon in solving homelessness and rethinking the welfare state, says Alex Stefany

The National Audit Office has released a sobering report detailing the homelessness problem in front of our new Government: the UK has reached a record high of over 112,000 homeless households. The need to act has never been clearer and with reports of a new Whitehall unit dedicated to tackling homelessness, Starmer's Labour Government has the chance to enact meaningful change for thousands of people. But more money alone will not deliver significant change. We need bold new thinking.

Millions of people around the UK are concerned about the rise in homelessness, with roughly 1,000 charities working in the space and a groundswell of bottom-up support for individual homeless people through tech platforms like GoFundMe. My organisation, Beam, has played a key role in Government efforts towards people-powered services for those experiencing or at risk of homelessness, working with over 80 Local Authorities to save the taxpayer north of £80 million to date.
