Homes under the Hammond

Head of news and events for think-tank Localis, Jonathan Werran, looks at what the Budget means for housing.

In delivering his second Budget of the year, the chancellor was seemingly hemmed in by a need to exert famed Treasury discipline over calls to inject £50bn into solving the housing crisis and a prime ministerial veto against relaxing Green Belt rules.

Certainly, an extra £15bn of new money found its way from the Exchequer's grasp into the housing mix as kindling for the new target to deliver 300,000 new homes a year five year's hence, although how much of this will be allocated to actual construction is not an ignoble question to ask.
