Time to get an honest act together

Some councils with unsustainable budgets are generously funded while others with sound financial management are poorly funded. For too many in local government it is the truth that dare not speak its name, writes John Sinnott.

On the same day recently HMI Constabulary reported that 33% of police forces are not good enough and the CQC reported that 70% of hospital trusts require improvement. The inspectors qualified their reports but understandable headlines followed.

It reminded me of the years up to 2010 when on the appointed day the 150 upper-tier councils awaited their own league table fate under the CPA and CAA regimes. Headlines focusing on the lowest rated councils always followed, ending some careers.
