Have hope, be proud

Now is the time for local government to build up its profile and support and realise the potential for civic pride that has always existed, writes Paul Wheeler.

The play Hope at the Royal Court Theatre in London was a novel form of festive entertainment. It details the inner workings and misery of a council trying to cope with large scale cuts and the implications on the citizens and councillors of a poor town.

Whilst gloomy (and sadly with no happy ending) it is, on the positive side, evidence that local politics – after much neglect – is once more part of the national debate.
