Housing took centre stage at the Labour Party Conference, forming a key part of major speeches. Thomas Bridge examines a new report on innovative solutions being delivered by councils and where both Labour and the Conservatives are directing policy

As delegates left the Labour Party Conference, ‘power' was the word left echoing around the halls. No, the fuse hadn't blown in the Liverpool conference centre. Instead, Labour's leaders, MP, mayors and mayoral hopefuls now seemed – after mounting pressure from within the party – intent on winning control and putting their pledges into action.

And it was local government that seemed to be shouting loudest. London mayor Sadiq Khan dropped the ‘P' word 38 times in his 11 minute speech. This wasn't due to the lack of a thesaurus – the bus driver's son clearly had a point to prove.
