Housing subsidy faces the axe, says Shapps

The Government has revealed it will scrap the Housing Revenue Account subsidy system and allow local authorities to keep the income generated through council house rents.

Housing minister, Grant Shapps, described the current system, where Whitehall gathered up the rents as ‘no longer fit for purpose', and vowed to replace it with a new scheme devolving more power to councils.
