Huge change brings opportunities for sector

A new Parliament presents a great opportunity to reset the relationship between national and local government, to work in partnership and deliver transformative change, says new chair of the LGA Louise Gittins

It is an honour for me to become chair of the Local Government Association, taking up this important cross-party role on behalf of councils of all types and political colours during what is a period of huge change, but also an opportunity for local government.

Councils are under pressure like never before, facing a funding gap of more than £6bn over the next two years. It's vitally important we find a sustainable and long-term financial solution, alongside the right powers and levers, so we can deliver on our shared ambitions with national government.
