IFS director predicts seven lean years for public sector

A leading finance expert has predicted the Chancellor will have no room in his Budget on March 21 for easing the fiscal squeeze.

Chancellor George Osborne will have no room in his Budget on March 21 for easing the fiscal squeeze because of global economic uncertainties, a leading finance expert has predicted.

Paul Johnson, director of the Institute of Fiscal Studies, said today: 'There is little chance of the Chancellor indulging in fiscal loosening because of uncertainties. If the eurozone breaks up then the economy will go into recession and all fiscal rules will go out the window.'
