The importance of the local

The local levers to achieve preventative change have often been badly understood by Governments and the interplay between local and national responsibility highlighted during the pandemic needs to be improved, says Professor Jim McManus.

As module one of the Covid Public Inquiry draws to a close, we are all taking stock of what has been said about how prepared the nation was for a pandemic. As president of the Association of Directors of Public Health (ADPH), and a core participant, I too gave evidence, representing the views of directors of public health across all four nations.

There are many lessons to learn from the evidence presented, and Reform's report out this week Health Security from the Ground Up points to the importance of public health in a far wider context.
