LOCAL GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION

There's still room for improvement

In the wake of the Casey report on Rotherham MBC, local government must rebuild trust. Paul Wheeler argues that if we are serious about sector-led improvement, the LGA should consider making a peer review a condition of membership

The publication of the Casey report is a defining moment for local government. While it is evident that the sexual abuse of vulnerable children is a systemic and widespread problem in our society, the public quite rightly expect more from their local councils, both in terms of their overall duty of care and in providing local leadership.

So, there is both a huge challenge and opportunity for the Local Government Association (LGA) as the national voice for local government. It is commendable that Cllr David Simmonds, as chairman of the children and young people board, is at the forefront of demands for a more joined-up response to the evils associated with child sexual exploitation.
