Inequality is so much more than a cost of living crisis

Paul Matthews sets out how Monmouthshire is shoring up existing community support to tackle the cost of living crisis, but he says structural inequality has to be confronted as a long-term game.

Hello from Wales. Who are we? We are Monmouthshire, a stunning border county. We are the gateway to economic south east Wales; both Severn Estuary bridges touch down here. We are the largest of 10 civic areas that make up the Cardiff Capital Region, until recently custodian of the largest devolution deal in the UK at £1.2bn.

We are often referred to as the home of modern tourism in the UK with a foot in the Brecon Beacons National Park, the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and without doubt, the food capital of Wales. This is a place with strong communities, clear identity, deep history and a successful local economy.
