The new Government is to change its tone on local government intervention – with a possible push towards more oversight in a beefed up watchdog. 

While new ministers have yet to reveal details of their plans, sources have suggested a shift from a more punitive approach towards more support for struggling authorities. In return, the new Government will expect troubled councils to make changes at ‘pace and scale'.
